There are three different ways we can form questions in Spanish.
First, we can raise our voice at the end of what we are saying. Say the sentence without raising your voice. Ustedes estudian español. Now, read the same sentence, but raise your voice at the end of it. ¿Ustedes estudian español? Raising your voice solicits a response from someone, which makes it a question.
Second, we can form a question by switching the positions of the subject and verb. Ustedes estudian español. ¿Estudian ustedes español?
Third, we can add a short question at the end of a sentence. This short question is called a tag question. Ustedes estudian español, ¿no?
Other common tag questions are
¿ok? Ok? ¿sí? Yes? ¿verdad? True? ¿y tú? And you? ¿vale? Ok?
¿Vale? Is very common in Spain and can also be an individual question to ask if all is good, much like the question ¿ok?.
Interrogative Words
Sometimes we want to ask a question that needs more than a yes or no response. In order to ask for specific information, we need to know interrogative words. Read and say each of the interrogative words out loud.
¿Adónde? To where?
¿Cómo? How?
¿Cuál? Which?
¿Cuáles? Which?/Which ones?
¿Cuándo? When?
¿Cuánto/a? How much?
¿Cuántos/as? How many?
¿De dónde? From where?
¿Dónde? Where?
¿Para qué? For what purpose?
¿Por qué? Why?
¿Qué? What?
¿Quién/es? Who?
Each of the interrogative words has a written accent mark. Without the accent mark, the interrogative words change meaning and is are no longer asking for information. So, it is important to learn these words with the written accent mark.
One interrogative word, ¿Por qué?, becomes one words and loses its accent mark when it is used to answer a question.
¿Por qué estudias español? = why Estudio español porque es importante. = because
Note how the prepositions a, con, and de precede the interrogative word. In Spanish you do not want to place a preposition at the end of sentence or question.
¿A dónde vas? = To where are you going?
¿Con quién estudias? = With whom do you study?
¿De dónde eres? = From where are you?
