    • Express thoughts clearly after analyzing a work of art using terminology appropriate to the subject.

    When examining works of art, it’s helpful to understand how they fit within their historical context. This is so, whether that context involves a cultural tradition, a significant event, or a contemporary trend. History, much like any story, is complex and multifaceted. Recognizing this complexity allows us to appreciate that historical narratives are rarely straightforward or absolute.

    Consider the following when thinking about history, culture, and heritage. The words heritage and culture, though used interchangeably by many, have significantly different meanings. Culture relates to amalgamating many histories, stories, artifacts, and built objects found in a particular region or location. Heritage is more personal. It is the conglomerate of narratives, stories, learned behaviors, artifacts, articles, and architecture that belong to one specific group. Heritage, tangible or intangible, when considered wholly, contributes to culture.
