Remember that only -ir verbs change in the preterit. They are in bold in the below list.

- recordar - to remember
- poder (inf) - to be able to
- volver - to return
- acostar(se) - to lay down / to lie down, to go to bed
- almorzar (ue) - used by some for to eat breakfast and by others to eat lunch
- dormir(se) - to sleep / to go to sleep
u--> ue
jugar - to play (This is the only verb that changes this way.)
e --> ie, i
comenzar / empezar (a inf.) - to begin
pensar - to think
recomendar - to recommend
despertar(se) - to wake / to wake up
entender - to understand
perder - to lose
querer - to want / to love
mentir - to lie (as in to tell a falsehood)
preferir - to prefer
divertir(se) - to amuse / to have fun
e --> i, i
pedir - to ask for
repetir - to repeat
Only some -ir verbs change this way in the present tense. You just have to memorize them.
