In this unit, we will focus on verbs that end in -ar. We will work on verbs that end in -er and -ir in the next unit. Here are some verbs that end in -ar.

hablar to speak viajar to travel
    mirar to watch pintar paint
escuchar to listen (note: escuchar does not have ¨to¨ after it like it does in English. bailar to dance
tocar to play (a musical instrument) descansar to rest
tomar to drink, to take (medicine)/(photographs) trabajar to work
calificar to grade llamar to call
enseñar to teach cocinar to cook
cantar to sing estudiar to study
dibujar to draw nadar to swim
practicar to practice visitar to visit
caminar to walk necesitar (inf) to need

    ¡Escuchemos! (Let´s listen!)

    Listen through minute 1:58

    Thinking about the grammar

What does the (inf.) mean after the verb ¨necesitar¨? It means that often times an infinitive (non conjugated verb) is used after the conjugated form of the verb ¨necesitar.¨ For example: ¨Necesito estudiar.¨ I need to study. These two verbs are working together as a team. We only conjugate the first one.

    Query \(\PageIndex{1}\)

¿Qué hacemos? What do we do?

    Example \(\PageIndex{1}\)

    ¿Bailas? Do you dance?

Sí, yo bailo. No, no bailo.

    Thinking about the grammar

Why are there two no´s here?

It is the same in English… ¨No, I do not dance.¨

    Exercise \(\PageIndex{1}\)

    Looking at the example above…

How do you ask a yes or no question in Spanish?

    Answer

Note that all you do is conjugate the verb correctly for the subject and either write question marks or put the sound of a question in your voice.

    Actividad comunicativa

Get with a partner and take turns asking each other whether you do some of the different activities in the list of verbs above. Make sure to use complete sentences to ask and to answer.
