cerca de las ocho son.

¿Esa es la hora señalada?
BUTTARELLI
Cierra el plazo, y es asunto
de perder quien no esté a punto
de la primer campanada.1
DON GONZALO
Quiera Dios que sea una chanza,2
y no lo que se murmura.
BUTTARELLI
No tengo aún3 por muy segura
de que cumplan, la esperanza;
pero si tanto os importa
lo que ello sea saber,
pues la hora está al caer,4
la dilación5 es ya corta.
DON GONZALO
Cúbrome, pues, y me siento.
(Se sienta a una mesa a la derecha, y se pone el
antifaz.)

Curioso el viejo me tiene
del misterio con que viene...
y no me quedo contento
hasta saber quién es él.
(Limpia y trajina,7 mirándole de reojo.8)
DON GONZALO

¡Que un hombre como yo tenga
que esperar aquí, y se avenga
con semejante papel!9
En fin, me importa el sosiego10
de mi casa,11 y la ventura12
de una hija sencilla y pura,
y no es para echarlo a juego.13
