Nata come Comunità economica europea con il trattato di Roma del 25 marzo 1957, nel corso di un lungo processo di integrazione, con l’adesione di nuovi Stati membri e la firma di numerosi trattati modificativi, tra cui il trattato di Maastricht del 1992, ha assunto la struttura attuale con il trattato di Lisbona del 2007.
