    Write a persuasive email. Choose one prompt below.

    • Write an email to a friend or family member. Persuade them to visit you in a place you know well.
    • Write to a friend or family member. Persuade them to move to a place you know well.

    Before you Write

    1. Make a list of places you know well. Choose the nicest place on your list. It can be a city, country, neighborhood or even your house!
    2. Make a list of aspects your friend/family member will like about this place. It could be the sights, the activities, the weather, festivals or the culture.
    3. Decide whether you will persuade your friend to visit or move to your place.

    Writing Checklist

    Is your genre clear? Does your email have_________?

    • An email address to your friend or family member. It does not have to be a real address.
    • A subject line that tell the main idea of the email. It should be short and specific.
    • A friendly greeting to your friend or family member.
    • A signature line with your name at the end.

    Is the purpose of your email clear? It should have__________

    • a clear topic. The place you are writing about should be obvious!
    • A clear purpose. Are you inviting a friend for a vacation or persuading them to move?
    • a positive tone.
    • at least five positive descriptive adjectives. Make one of them a comparative adjective to show how much better your place is.

    • a friendly, informal tone for your friend or family member.

    The email persuades the recipient to visit a place as a tourist or move there. The tone is positive, and there are enough details to sell the place.

    Genre/audience/purpose

    The text is an email. It has a subject line, email address, greeting, signature line, and the content is addressed to the recipient. The tone is appropriate for the recipient. The audience, purpose, and selected place (topic) are all clear.

    Vocabulary

    The word choice makes the place seem attractive. The word choice is varied and not repetitive. Word form is accurate. Student uses appropriate phrases from mentor texts.

    Grammar and mechanics

    The email uses at least five descriptive adjectives accurately. At least one of those adjectives is comparative. The grammar has been edited for accuracy.
