    Dialogue is rhythm, conflict, behavior, timing, and intention. It is never random. It is not a transcription of natural speech. Real people ramble, interrupt, repeat themselves, trail off, contradict themselves, or make no sense at all. Screen dialogue must feel real but function like architecture. Everything said must reveal character, advance conflict, or deepen tension. Anything else can be cut.

    Dialogue is strongest when it sits on top of emotional behavior. Characters do not speak their feelings. They reveal their feelings through what they want, what they refuse to say, and how they try to change the other person in the scene.

    Before we look at technique, here is a story about dialogue used sparingly and powerfully.
