Welcome to Passo dopo passo.
This textbook grew from the belief that language learning happens best when it feels meaningful, gradual, and connected to real life. The title Passo dopo passo reflects this philosophy. Learning Italian is a journey that unfolds one step at a time—through exposure, practice, reflection, and curiosity. This book is designed to support that process by guiding students progressively through language, culture, and communication in ways that are accessible, engaging, and grounded in authentic contexts.
The idea behind the book
Passo dopo passo was created to offer students and instructors an open, flexible, and human-centered resource for Elementary Italian. The goal is not only to present grammar and vocabulary, but also to show Italian as a living language—an expression of culture, relationships, daily life, and community.
Throughout the book, students encounter a blend of authentic images, real-life stories, videos, and culturally grounded materials. Many of these elements come from everyday experiences generously shared by friends, family members, and members of the Italian-speaking community. Their contributions help bring warmth and authenticity to the learning experience.
At the same time, the materials are carefully structured and refined through thoughtful pedagogical design, including the support of AI tools used to help organize content, polish explanations, and improve accessibility. The result is a learning experience that aims to feel both handcrafted and dynamic: rooted in real voices and lived experiences while benefiting from thoughtful digital support.
How the book is organized
This textbook is designed to help both students and instructors move through the material clearly and intentionally. Each unit builds gradually on previous knowledge and integrates language, culture, and communication in a cohesive way.
In general, students will find:
- clear explanations of vocabulary and grammar
- examples presented in meaningful contexts
- cultural reflections and comparisons
- authentic visual and audio materials
- guided practice and review activities
- opportunities to reflect, speak, write, and interact
The structure of the book is designed to make navigation intuitive. Students can follow the progression step by step, returning to examples and practice as needed. Instructors can use the materials flexibly, adapting them to their teaching style, course format, and student needs.

For students and instructors
For students, this book is meant to be a companion. It is a place to explore the language without feeling overwhelmed, to build confidence gradually, and to recognize that learning a language is not about perfection, but about participation, practice, and growth.
For instructors, this textbook is intended as a flexible foundation that can support different teaching approaches. It can be used as a primary text, adapted for specific course goals, or expanded with additional activities and materials. Its open educational nature invites collaboration, revision, and continued development.
Acknowledging the work that came before
The development of Passo dopo passo was informed by exploring the Open Educational Resources that were already available for teaching Italian. In particular, projects such as Spunti, Voci, and Tutt# a tavola offered valuable inspiration and helped shape the early stages of this work. Their commitment to accessible, community-centered language learning helped open a path for imagining how open materials could support students and instructors in meaningful ways.
As the project developed, those early explorations gradually evolved into something new and original. Passo dopo passo grew into a resource with its own voice, structure, and pedagogical vision while continuing to share the collaborative spirit that characterizes many OER initiatives.
Special attention was also devoted to ensuring that the book is accessible and usable for as many learners as possible. This effort was made possible through the patient and knowledgeable guidance of Shagun Kaur, whose expertise in Open Educational Resources and accessibility standards helped shape the design and development of the book in fundamental ways.
For this reason, Passo dopo passo should be seen as part of an ongoing and collaborative process. Like language learning itself, it continues to grow and evolve over time. Feedback, suggestions, and contributions are always welcomed as part of this shared journey.

Although I am the author of this textbook, it is truly the result of a collective effort—one that reflects the sense of generosity, collaboration, and community that is so central to Italian culture.

The Structure of the Book
One of the guiding ideas behind Passo dopo passo is that language learning develops gradually, through a series of small and meaningful steps. For this reason, every unit in the book follows the same sequence of sections. This recurring structure creates a clear and supportive path that accompanies students from discovery to practice, communication, cultural exploration, and reflection.
As you move through the book, you will begin to recognize this rhythm. Each section has a specific purpose and contributes to building confidence, understanding, and communicative ability over time. Instructors can also rely on this structure as a flexible framework for organizing lessons and guiding classroom activities.
The titles of these sections are also intentionally chosen to highlight the connection between language and culture. The word passo—“step”—is at the heart of the book’s title and structure. In Italian, passo appears in many verbs, nouns, and idiomatic expressions related to movement, progress, rhythm, and personal growth. Each section title uses one of these expressions, connecting the process of learning a language with expressions that Italians commonly use in everyday life.
Each unit follows the same sequence:
Un primo passo — A First Step
In everyday Italian, fare un primo passo means to begin something new or to take the initiative toward a new experience.
In the context of the book, this section introduces the theme of the unit and offers a first encounter with new language elements. Students discover essential vocabulary and useful expressions that help them begin engaging with the topic of the unit.
The goal of this section is to create a comfortable starting point while helping learners become familiar with the sounds and words of Italian.
Un passo avanti — A Step Forward
The expression fare un passo avanti is used to describe making progress or moving forward in understanding.
In this section, students take that step forward by exploring how the language is structured. Key grammar patterns are introduced in connection with the vocabulary and themes of the unit, helping learners recognize how words and sentences work together to create meaning.
Un passo in più — One Step Further
In Italian, fare un passo in più suggests going a little further, making an extra effort, or expanding on what has already been started.
Here the language becomes active through communication. Students apply vocabulary and grammar in meaningful contexts through speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities that encourage them to express ideas and interact using Italian.
Al passo coi tempi — Keeping Up with the Times
The expression al passo coi tempi describes someone or something that stays connected with contemporary life and current cultural practices.
In the context of the book, this section focuses on the cultural dimension of the language. Through images, short readings, and authentic examples, students explore everyday habits, social customs, and cultural perspectives that help them understand how Italian is lived and experienced today.
Un passo indietro — A Step Back
The expression fare un passo indietro means to pause for a moment and step back in order to reflect or gain perspective.
Within the unit, this section offers an opportunity to review and reinforce what has been learned. Activities revisit key vocabulary and concepts, allowing students to strengthen their understanding and consolidate their progress.
A che punto sei? — Where Are You Now?
This common Italian question asks about someone’s progress in a task or journey.
Here it invites students to reflect on their learning experience. The self-assessment at the end of each unit helps learners recognize what they can already do in Italian and identify the next steps in their learning path.
Un passo alla volta — One Step at a Time
Throughout the book, students will occasionally encounter small note boxes titled Un passo alla volta (“One step at a time”). These brief notes offer practical tips, encouragement, and simple strategies to help navigate moments in the learning process that may feel challenging or overwhelming.
Their purpose is to help students stay grounded and find practical ways to approach new material with confidence. Learning a language naturally includes moments of uncertainty, mistakes, and repetition. These notes serve as a reminder that imperfection is an essential part of growth. Trying, adjusting, and trying again—un passo alla volta—is how progress happens.
Above all, these notes reflect the spirit of this book: a supportive learning environment where experimentation, practice, and mistakes are not only accepted but welcomed as part of the journey toward communicating in Italian.
