    Welcome to Passo dopo passo.

    This textbook grew from the belief that language learning happens best when it feels meaningful, gradual, and connected to real life. The title Passo dopo passo reflects this philosophy. Learning Italian is a journey that unfolds one step at a time, one that involves intentional exposure, practice, reflection, and curiosity. This book is designed to support that process by guiding students progressively through language, culture, and communication in ways that are accessible, engaging, and grounded in authentic contexts.

    The idea behind the book

    Passo dopo passo was created to offer students and instructors an open, flexible, and authentic voices for Elementary Italian. The goal is not only to present grammar and vocabulary, but also to show Italian as a living language—an expression of culture, relationships, daily life, and community. 

    Throughout the book, students encounter a blend of authentic images, real-life stories, videos, and culturally grounded materials. Many of these elements come from everyday experiences generously shared by friends, family members, and members of the Italian-speaking community. Their contributions help bring warmth and authenticity to the learning experience.

    This book was developed from a holistic perspective, with the goal of supporting different learning styles and the many types of learners who may use it. Through a combination of videos, audio materials, texts, visuals, and structured tables, the book provides multiple ways to engage with the language and reinforce key concepts. In this way, students can build their understanding gradually, one step at a time, which is at the heart of the philosophy behind Passo dopo passo

    At the same time, the materials are carefully structured and refined through cohesive, inclusive pedagogical design, including support by AI tools that help organize content, polish explanations, and improve accessibility. The result is a learning experience inspired by the warmth and welcoming spirit and the sense of openness for which the Italian culture is known worldwide.

    How the book is organized

    This textbook is designed to help both students and instructors move through each unit gradually, while building on previous knowledge and integrating language, culture, and communication in a cohesive way.

     Students will find:

    • contextually focused explanations of vocabulary and grammar
    • cultural comparisons and reflections
    • authentic audio and audiovisual  materials
    • guided practice, ample opportunities to interact and reflect orally and in writing
    • review and expansion activities

    A collective effort

    Although I am the author of Passo Dopo Passo, this textbook is truly the result of a collective effort—one that reflects the generosity, collaboration, and community that are so central to Italian culture.

    The development of Passo dopo passo was informed by exploring the Open Educational Resources (OER) that were already available for teaching Italian. In particular, projects such as Spunti, Voci, and Tutt# a tavola offered valuable inspiration and helped shape the early stages of this work. Ultimately,  Passo dopo passo grew into a resource with its own voice, structure, and pedagogical vision while continuing to share a common commitment to free digital learning and teaching materials.

    I would also like to thank each and every friend and family member who enthusiastically shared pictures, voices, and videos to help create an authentic and unique learning experience for students. Their contributions brought warmth, reality, and humanity to these pages.

    I am especially grateful to Marie Bertola, Teaching Professor at Santa Clara University,  for her guidance and valuable feedback throughout the revision process, which helped bring many of the book’s ideas more fully to life. I would also like to acknowledge Letizia Pastore, UC Berkeley undergraduate, for her careful editing and revisions, which contributed to shaping a clearer and more accessible, student-friendly approach to the language used throughout the book.
