Dynamic range is the difference between the quietest and loudest parts of a mix, measured in decibels (dB). A well-managed dynamic range provides impact and clarity without distortion or listener fatigue.
It is essential that audio levels remain within the dynamic range of the medium for which the program is intended. If the range is too wide, loud sections may clip or distort, while soft parts fall below the noise floor.

Mix engineers tailor compression and limiting to suit the delivery format—radio and TV require tighter control, while film and high-resolution media can preserve wide dynamics. The goal is to stay within the medium’s technical limits while maintaining artistic expression.
