Consistent practice is the only way to build aural skills. Ear training is not the kind of class where you can leave practicing and preparation to the night before an exam. Use these activities to guide your practice time each day.
Apps
Earpeggio
This free app has a "Rhythmic Dictation" exercise under the Practice activities. For a good practice activity, select the following:
- Time Signature: 4/4
- Note Lengths: All except the two triplets (15 selections)
- Number of Bars: 1 (you can do up to four, but with so many note length options, 1 will give you focused practice to try and remember and not write it down)
- Tempo: Adjust as you need, but 80 is a good place to start
Perfect Ear
This free app has a "Rhythm Training" exercise. To practice rhythmic dictation that uses eighths and sixteenths, choose the one titled, "Rhythm Input." Though you can use the first three categories for review and practice, the area that will help improve concepts from this chapter is the "Eights and sixteenths" activity. This will give you two measures worth of rhythm for dictation.
Tips: If you need to slow down the tempo, the metronome is in the top right corner. You may want to have a piece of paper close to write down your rhythm and then put it into the app.
Additional Practicing Ideas
- Find another music student and practice together. Write out your own syncopated rhythms and use them as dictation or perform them.
- Listen to any pop song and notate the rhythm of the melody for the chorus.
