    Rules for Capitalization

    Capitalize the first letter of a sentence.

    Students often visit their teachers during office hours.

    The city, state, and country

    New York, Maryland, England, Nigeria, Ethiopia, China

    The adjective form of countries

    English, Nigerian, Ethiopian, Chinese

    The person identified by country

    American(s), Nigerian(s), Canadian(s)

    Indigenous groups

    Iroquois, Yoruba, Maya

    Languages

    English, French, Twi, Dutch

    Religions

    Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity

    Days and Months

    Tuesday, February

    The pronoun “I,” even when it appears in the middle of a sentence

    My brother and I live in a small apartment.

    The main words of titles of books, movies, poems, songs, etc.

    Things Fall Apart, The Advantages of Cell Phones

    Be careful! Don’t capitalize words such as mother, father, sister, doctor, teacher, etc. These are common nouns even though we often write about them as unique people in our lives.
