Research (or the process of investigating a topic and finding sources of information that help to establish facts and/or reach a conclusion) can be intimidating and confusing. However, there is a fairly simple set of steps to the research process!
Steps in the Process
- Identify and develop your topic
- Your assignment might set your topic or guide you in selecting it.
- You should choose a topic that you find interesting.
- You should choose a topic that you can find enough information about.
- Start by doing some background research on the topic
- Learn some of the history or context of the topic.
- Learn about related topics you might want to research.
- Locate your sources of information
- Look to your assignment to see if you are required to use specific types of resources.
- Consider the questions you need to answer.
- Evaluate your sources of information
- You want to make sure that your sources are credible, reliable, and unbiased.
- Read those sources and make notes to use later
- Make sure to record citation information!
- Note the page or section/paragraph # for any information you plan to use later.
- Write your paper / Complete your assignment
- Cite your sources
- Proofread what you've done!
