You already learned and practiced the preterite in Chapter 1 and the imperfect in Chapter 2, along with an overview of the two together. Before we used them again in the next section (this time more intentionally), let's review the conjugations once again.

El pretérito

Regular Forms

	-ar verbs	-er verbs	-ir verbs
	hablar	comer	vivir
yo	hablé	comí	viví
tú	hablaste	comiste	viviste
él/ella/usted	habló	comió	vivió
nosotros/as	hablamos	comimos	vivimos
ellos/ellas/ustedes	hablaron	comieron	vivieron

Irregular Forms

1. A change in 3rd person singular (él/ella/usted) and 3rd person plural (ellos/ellas/ustedes):

	e -> i	o -> u	i -> y
	pedir	dormir	leer
yo	pedí	dormí	leí
tú	pediste	dormiste	leíste
él/ella/usted	pidió	durmió	leyó
nosotros/as	pedimos	dormimos	leímos
ellos/ellas/ustedes	pidieron	durmieron	leyeron

2. A change in spelling to maintain the correct sound in the 1st person singular (yo):

	c -> qu	g -> gu	z -> c
yo	expliqué	jugué	empecé

3. A verb that adopts a different stem, and will usually have these endings (note that endings do not have an accent):

		Tener -> Tuv-
yo	-e	tuve
tú	-iste	tuviste
él/ella/usted	-o	tuvo
nosotros/as	-imos	tuvimos
ellos/ellas/ustedes	-ieron	tuvieron

4. Completely irregular forms:

	ir / ser	ver
yo	fui	vi
tú	fuiste	viste
él/ella/usted	fue	vio
nosotros/as	fuimos	vimos
ellos/ellas/ustedes	fueron	vieron
