Adverbs describe how, when and where actions happen. They modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. You have already seen many adverbs (e.g., già, spesso, molto, bene,, etc.). Now we will focus on how to construct adverbs from adjectives.
We make adverbs out of adjectives all the time in English. For example, "active" becomes "actively", "unfortunate" becomes "unfortunately", and so on. The pattern here is to simply add the suffix "-ly" to the end of the adjective. In Italian, you would use the suffix -mente. Here’s how:
(a) If an adjective ends in a consonant, take the feminine singular form and add -mente.
Aggettivo(m., sing.) | Aggettivo (f., sing.) | Avverbio | Inglese |
---|---|---|---|
attivo | attiva | attivamente | actively |
intero | intera | interamente | entirely |
serio | seria | seriamente | seriously |
(b) If an adjective ends in e vowel, do not use the feminine form. Just add -mente to the end:
Aggettivo (m., sing.) | Avverbo | Anglais |
---|---|---|
vero | veramente | really |
separato | separamente | separately |
assoluto | assolutamente | absolutely |
Aggettivo(m., sing.) | Avverbio | Inglese |
---|---|---|
felice gentile |
felicemente gentilmente |
happily kindly |
(d) Of course, there are irregular adverbs:
Aggettivo | Avverbio | Inglese | Esempi |
---|---|---|---|
buono | bene | well | Il tuo italiano è buono, tu parli bene. |
brutto | male | badly | La sua scrittura è brutta. Lei scrive male. |
piccolo | po' | little | Questa è una piccola porzione. Il bambino mangia un po' |
gentil | gentilmente | nicely | Sono gentile. Ti domando gentilmente. |
(e) Here’s a good list of other valuable adverbs, some of which you have seen before:
Avverbio | Inglese | Avverbio | Inglese |
---|---|---|---|
velocemente, presto | fast, quickly | rapidamente | fast, quickly |
a volte | sometimes | raramente | rarely |
qualche volta | sometimes | mai | never |
in generale | in general | sicuramente | certainly |
spesso | often | onestamente | sincerely |
abbastanza | rather, quite | francamente | frankly, honestly |
di tanto in tanto | from time to time | chiaramente | clearly |
