Karla Gutiérrez was born in Mexicali, Mexico, and spent the early years of her life in the Mexicali-Calexico border region. Her educational journey began at the Imperial Valley College, where she started as an English as a Second Language (ESL) student. She earned an Associate Degree before transferring to Sand Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus, where she completed a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish. She later earned a Master's Degree in Spanish-American Literature from San Diego State University main campus and subsequently obtained a Spanish-English Translation Certificate from the University of California, San Diego.
From 2001 to 2016, Karla taught as a part-time instructor at several community colleges and universities throughout Sand Diego County. In 2016, she joined Cuyamaca College as a full-time Spanish instructor and currently serves as the Chair of the World Languages Department.
Throughout her career at Cuyamaca College, Karla has been deeply committed to equity-minded teaching practices and the advancement of Open Educational Resources (OER). She has served as both Open Educational Resources Coordinator and Teaching and Learning Coordinator, roles through which she engaged in extensive professional development and led initiatives focused on increasing educational accessibility and student success. These experiences helped prepare her to create innovative OER materials for Spanish language instruction. In addition, she has collaborated in institutional efforts to promote equity, reduce barriers to learning, and expand access to high-quality, no-cost instructional materials for students, particularly those facing financial challenges.
In 2021, she published ¡Naveguemos Juntos!, an open educational resources designed to support beginning Spanish learners taking the first and second semester courses. Building on the success of that project, she launched Somos in 2024, an OER created for third-semester Spanish students. The development of Somos inspired the creation of Hablemos claro, her most recent OER project, designed specifically for Spanish conversation courses and focused on helping students develop confidence and fluency through meaningful communication.
Through her work, Karla continues to advocate for accessible, affordable, and culturally relevant learning materials that support student success and promote language learning for all.
