Intellectual property (IP) refers to ideas as things of value that are owned by their creators. This includes inventions, works of literature, music, and visual arts including symbols and logos, and much more as well. Intellectual property may be created and owned by an individual or by an entity such as a software company, which brings up complex legal and ethical questions about the rights of individuals vs. groups, and whether corporations can or should have the same rights as individuals. We’ll discuss this idea in a moment.
Intellectual property law oversees intellectual property owners’ rights and the enforcement of those rights, such as how ownership can be demonstrated, communicated, controlled, or shared. You’ve most likely heard of copyright, which is a type of intellectual property law.
