Learning Objectives

7: Integrate students’ own ideas with those of others
9: Summarize, analyze, and evaluate the arguments, counterarguments, and evidence in the writing of others

Students will practice paraphrasing text using an open letter call to emergency action from health professionals on global climate change and health. Students will then integrate the work of others into an argumentative essay or response letter.

5.1: Climate Change and Paraphrasing Readings
Students will be introduced to and then read a call-to-action letter from health science editors about the cost and responsibility of rich nations to slow down and halt global warming and ecological devastation.
5.2: Climate Change and Paraphrasing Classroom Activity
Students will be introduced to paraphrasing as a means of translation, given tools to paraphrase, and practice paraphrasing in groups of peers using the text.
5.3: Climate Change and Paraphrasing Activities
Students will receive some tips for integrating paraphrases into their writing and given a choice of writing a response letter or an argumentative research essay utilizing the call-to-action letter.
