This module focuses on Africa being the birthplace of humanity and civilization as well as the early formative years of some African dynasties. Students will learn about the greatness of classical African civilizations before the presence of Europeans and colonization. It's imperative that historical discussions and lessons about African Americans begin in ancient Africa and not the European and North American enslavement eras. Far too often, the story of African Americans, as told in popular culture and many educational institutions, begins in bondage and that inaccurately ignores the rich history their ancestors who's traditions, contributions, and innovations offered so much to the world and their modern day descendants.
Student Learning Outcomes/Course Objectives Covered
This module will:
- Introduce students to fundamental concepts and theories within African American Studies, Africana Studies, Black Studies, African Diaspora Studies, and African Studies.
- Provide students with the tools to analyze key issues affecting individuals and groups of African descent in the United States, the Americas, across the Diaspora, and throughout the world.
Upon Completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Recognize and discuss social issues affecting people of African descent in the United States, across the African Diaspora, and throughout the world, with knowledge of Africa as a place of origin.
