Adverbs describe how, when and where actions happen. They modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. You have already seen many adverbs (e.g., déjà, souvent, très, bien, etc.). Now we will focus on how to construct adverbs from adjectives.
We make adverbs out of adjectives all the time in English. For example, "active" becomes "actively", "unfortunate" becomes "unfortunately", and so on. The pattern here is to simply add the suffix "-ly" to the end of the adjective. In French, you would use the suffix -ment. Here’s how:
(a) If an adjective ends in a vowel, just add -ment to the end of the adjective:
Adjectif (m., sing.) | Adverbe | Anglais |
---|---|---|
vrai | vraiment | really |
séparé | séparément | separately |
absolu | absolument | absolutely |
(b) If an adjective ends in a consonant, take the feminine singular form and add -ment.
Adjectif (m., sing.) | Adjectif (f., sing.) | Adverbe | Anglais |
---|---|---|---|
actif | active | activement | actively |
heureux | heureuse | heureusement | fortunately |
entier | entière | entièrement | entirely |
sérieux | sérieuse | sérieusement | seriously |
intellectuel | intellectuelle | intellectuellement | intellectually |
(c) If an adjective ends in -ant or -ent (in the masculine form), replace the ending with -amment or -emment, repectively:
Adjectif (m., sing.) | Adverbe | Anglais |
---|---|---|
différent | différemment | differently |
évident | évidemment | obviously |
constant | constamment | constantly |
courant | couramment | fluently |
NOTE: lentement (slowly) is an exception to this rule.
(d) Of course, there are irregular adverbs:
Adjectif (m., sing.) | Adverbe | Anglais | Exemples |
---|---|---|---|
bon | bien | well | Ton français est bon. Tu le parles bien. |
mauvais | mal | badly | Son écriture est mauvaise. Elle écrit mal. |
petit | peu | little | Sa portion est petite. Cet enfant mange peu. |
gentil | gentiment | nicely | Je suis gentil. Je te demande gentiment. |
(e) Here’s a good list of other valuable adverbs, some of which you have seen before:
Adverbe | Anglais | Adverbe | Anglais |
---|---|---|---|
vite | fast, quickly | rapidement | fast, quickly |
parfois | sometimes | rarement | rarely |
quelquefois | sometimes | jamais | never |
en général | in general | certainement | certainly |
souvent | often | longuement | at length, lengthily |
assez | rather, quite | franchement | frankly, honestly |
de temps en temps | from time to time | clairement | clearly |
sincèrement | sincerely |
