En las construcciones reflexivas, el sujeto y el objeto (complemento directo o indirecto) se refieren a la misma persona o cosa: |
In reflexive constructions, both the subject and the indirect object (be it direct or indirect) refer back to the same person or thing: |
Pronombres reflexivos
Las construcciones reflexivas son frecuentes en español. Estos son los pronombres que emplean: | Reflexive constructions are quite frequent in Spanish. They use the following set of pronouns: |
Pronombres reflexivos |
||
(yo) (tú, vos) (usted, él, ella) (nosotros) (vosotros) (ustedes, ellos, ellas) |
me te se nos os se |
me (myself) you (yourself) him, her, it, you (usted) us (ourselves) you (plural) [in Spain] them, you (ustedes) |
Me pregunté: ¿qué puedo hacer? Ella se cuida bien. Nos estamos bañando. = Estamos bañándonos. No se quisieron ver. = No quisieron verse. ¿Te lavaste las manos? ¿Te las lavaste? Ya os conocéis, ¿verdad? |
I asked myself: what can I do? She takes care of herself. We're bathing (ourselves). They refused to see each other (or themselves). Did you wash your hands? Did you wash them? You know each other already, don't you? |
• Los pronombres reflexivos ocupan el mismo lugar que los otros pronombres de complemento: justo antes del verbo conjugado (excepto imperativos positivos) o se unen después del infinitivo o del gerundio: Nos estamos bañando. = Estamos bañándonos. Te debes afeitar. = Debes afeitarte. No se puso el sombrero. = No quiso ponérselo. = No se lo quiso poner. |
• Reflexives are placed in the same position as other object pronouns: immediately before a conjugated verb (except for positive commands), or joined to the end of an infinitive or a gerund. We're bathing (ourselves or each other). You need to shave (yourself). He didn't put his hat on. He refused to put it on. |
• La forma reflexiva después de preposición es sí, que se refiere al sujeto (ver también §44). Con + si = consigo. Están luchando entre sí. Puede hacerlo por sí misma (sin ayuda). Hablaba consigo (con él mismo). |
• The reflexive form after prepositions is sí, referring back to the subject (see also §44). Con followed by sí forms consigo. They're fighting among themselves. She can do it by herself (on her own). He was talking to himself. |
• The plural reflexive pronouns may mean either themselves (reflexive) or each other (reciprocal). Logic will normally indicate which is intended; a sentence such as Se escriben is more likely to mean "they write to each other" than "they write to themselves". If it is important to make clear which is meant, insert the adverb mutuamente or variations such as the ones in the following examples: Many people remind themselves about their priorities. Couples remind/remember one another (mutuamente). Juan and María remember and love each other (el uno a la otra). Juan and I understand each other. We know each other well. |
Verbos pronominales
Hay un grupo de verbos que típicamente aparece en las construcciones reflexivas: los que indican que el sujeto realiza la acción sobre sí mismo, sobre su cuerpo o sobre algo que lleva o tiene. Algunos de estos verbos son: |
There is a group of verbs which is typical of reflexive constructions: those which indicate that the subject is performing an action on itself, on its body or on something it has or is wearing. Here are some of these verbs: |
El sujeto sobre sí mismo |
El sujeto sobre su cuerpo |
El sujeto sobre algo que lleva o tiene |
|||
cuidarse |
to take care of oneself |
acostarse (ue) |
to go to bed, lie down |
arreglarse |
to groom oneself, to fix |
Ejemplos: | |
Nos estamos cuidando mucho. ¿Cómo te llamas? Juan se cortó un dedo cocinando. No queremos mojarnos la ropa. Se arregló un poco la corbata. Te ensuciaste los zapatos otra vez. Debes quitarte el sombrero en clase. |
We're taking good care of ourselves. What's your name? John cut his finger while cooking. We don't want to get our clothes wet. He fixed his necktie a bit. You got your shoes dirty again. You should take your hat off in class. |
• Casi todos estos verbos pueden también emplearse como transitivos, es decir, con complementos directos para indicar que la acción se realiza sobre otros, y obviamente sin pronombre reflexivo: Acosté a los niños a las diez y después me acosté yo. Divirtió mucho a sus amigos. Todos se divirtieron. Se bañó ella y también bañó al perro. |
• Nearly all of these verbs may be used as transitive, that is, with direct objects to represent an action performed on someone or something other than the subject, obviously without a reflexive pronoun. I put the children to bed at ten and then I went to bed. He amused his friends a lot. They all enjoyed themselves. She bathed (herself) and bathed (washed) the dog, too. |
• Ya que el reflexivo indica de quién es la parte del cuerpo o la ropa, en estas construcciones normalmente no se usa el adjetivo posesivo: Me sequé el cabello con esta toalla. Mi amiga se tatuó un lobo en el brazo. ¿Por qué no te pones la camisa roja? |
• Since the reflexive pronoun indicates possession, these constructions normally avoid the use of possessive adjectives (unlike English). I dried my hair with this towel. My friend got a tatoo of a wolf on her arm. Why don't you put on your red shirt? |
Construcciones reflexivas vs. valorativas
Las construcciones reflexivas no deben confundirse con las valorativas (como gustar), que emplean pronombres de complemento indirecto (ver §46). | Reflexive constructions are not to be confused with constructions used for verbs like gustar, which take indirect object pronouns (see §46). |
Construcción valorativa: el sujeto (la fiesta, las estrellas, la mañana, la astronomía) produce una reacción sobre el objeto indirecto (me, les, etc.): | Construcción reflexiva: el sujeto (yo, ellos, nosotros, ella) y el objeto (me, se, nos) son la misma persona. | ||
I liked the party. Stars fascinated them. We love mornings. Astronomy interests him/her. Do you like going to bed late? |
Me gustó la fiesta. Les fascinaban las estrellas. Nos encanta la mañana. Le interesa la astronomía. ¿Te gusta acostarte tarde? |
Me divertí en la fiesta. Se acostaban bajo las estrellas. Nos levantamos por la mañana. Se sienta a estudiar astronomía. ¿Te acuestas tarde? |
I had fun in the party. They would lie under the stars. We get up in the morning. S/he sits down to study astronomy. Do you go to bed late? |
Pero verbos como gustar pueden expresar reacciones recíprocas y en ese caso se emplean en construcciones reflexivas en plural: Nos gustamos mucho (el uno al otro). (románticamente) Nos caemos bien (mutuamente). (como amigos) |
But verbs like gustar may express reciprocal reactions, in which case they are used in plural reflexive constructions: We like each other. (romantically) We like each other. (as friends) |
