    Course Description

    This course will enable the student to demonstrate cultural and communicative competence at the novice-mid level in Spanish in the presentational (writing and speaking), interpersonal (writing and speaking), and interpretative (listening and reading) modes of communication. The student will develop a critical awareness of differences and similarities between the home culture(s) and the target language culture(s).

    Butler-Assessed Outcomes

    The intention is for the student to be able to do the following:

    1. Interpret with cultural and communicative competence what is heard, read, or viewed at the novice-mid level in Spanish.

    2. Communicate in written and oral formats in presentational and interpersonal modes at the novice-mid level in Spanish.

    Learning Units

    Unidad Introductoria

    • Contrast language proficiency and performance
    • Describe the path to proficiency
    • Recognize the three modes of communication
    • Set personal language goals
    • Recognize the benefits of language learning
    • Identify strategies to effectively study another language
    • Recognize class expectations

    Unidad 1

    • Greet others and respond to simple greetings
    • Provide basic personal information (e.g., your name, country/city of origin)
    • Ask simple questions
    • Spell out words when needed and ask others how to write something
    • Pronounce Spanish consonants and vowels
    • Ask about what someone is like and describe yourself
    • Find out about and describe the physical and personality traits of others
    • Ask and answer simple questions about quantity

    Unidad 2

    • Describe common classroom items
    • Talk about your life as a university student: Classes, activities, places, and people in your life
    • Talk about activities you and others do (-ar verbs)
    • Talk about when your classes and other activities take place (date and time)
    • Ask for and give the date
    • Ask for and tell the current time
    • Ask for others’ age, tell your age

    Unidad 3

    • Describe your and others’ families, including names, quantity and physical/personality attributes
    • Talk about activities you do with friends and family
    • Use numbers between 30 and 100
    • Express possession

    Unidad 4

    • Describe household rooms and furniture
    • Talk about chores in and outside the house and activities you like or don’t like
    • Use numbers 100 to 1.000.000
    • Use the prepositions of location to describe where things and people are located in a house
