    Purpose of Formatting

The purpose of formatting the SD card is to erase everything on the card and to prepare the card to record the media from this specific camera. If the SD card has been formatted in a different brand of camera, you may get an error message when you hit record that says you cannot record on the SD card. If this happens, format the SD card for the camera you are using. Make sure to save any files you need on the SD card to a computer or hard drive before formatting the card because formatting the card will erase everything.
