3: Scripting and Formats

( \newcommand{\kernel}{\mathrm{null}\,}\)

Learning Objectives

1. Gain an understanding of single column and multi-column script formats used in video production.

2. Learn how to build a show by planning out segment timing and production elements using rundown.

3. Explore the different story formats used in broadcast news and digital productions.

  • 3.1: Rundowns, Formats and Storyboards
Television formats define the concept of a program, which can be copyrighted and licensed for synchronization.  Rundowns are an abbreviated breakdown of every element included in a program, allowing for the creative team to understand the timing and production at a glance.
  • 3.2: Single-Column Scripts
Explore the difference between single-column scripts used in narrative production and multi-column scripts used in commercial and multi-camera video productions.
  • 3.3: Multi-Column Scripts
Multi-column scripts are also referred to as "AV" scripts (Audio Visual), two-column, and three-column scripts.  Learn the different styles of production that commonly use multi-column scripts during production.
  • 3.4: Three-Act Structure
Storytelling has been around since the beginning of humankind.  Creating compelling and engaging stories using video production techniques draws from the same principles of strong storytelling techniques.
