These questions include: What is reality? What is the nature of the self? Does God exist? What is good and just? How should we live? Philosophy courses seek to deepen understanding of such issues by engaging with the works of past and present thinkers, while situating their ideas within the historical and cultural contexts in which they emerged. Through this study, students develop skills in logical and critical reasoning, uncover hidden assumptions, engage in open debate, cultivate independent thought, and learn to apply philosophical insights to contemporary life. The major subfields of philosophy include metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, political philosophy, logic, and the philosophy of science.
