    Why Spanish OER?

Like the students who choose to study other world languages, the students who wish to take 2 years of college-level Spanish could spend up to $1,000 in textbooks and publishers’ access codes to complete all 4 levels.

We are a team of 4 community college faculty who teach these courses regularly at institutions in Northern and Southern California. Every semester, we see students agonizing with the rising cost of textbook bundles that directly affects their engagement and success in the classroom.

Through this project, we want to provide open-access Spanish content created with community college students in mind. In Libretexts, instructors will be able to

    • remix the content,
    • customize it to their students and colleges, and
    • easily import it into Canvas or another course management system.

    What is Entrada Libre?

Entrada Libre means "free entrance/entry" in Spanish which embodies the idea of OER for us. We wanted to create content that can be shared with other Spanish instructors without restrictions. Entrada Libre is an intermediate/advanced college-level Spanish OER grammar manual for second language learners and heritage speakers of Spanish at the community college level. Instructors will be able to download the entire manual as well as the H5P activities library or use the OER Remixer from LibreTexts to adapt, edit, and customize content and publish it in their LMS. Each of the 24 units includes a reading with examples of the grammar points used in context, grammar explanation, and self-graded follow-up activities for practice using H5P as a formative assessment. Entrada Libre can be used with Acceso, an existing open-access project created by the University of Kansas which contains great cultural readings and resources for intermediate and advanced levels.

Entrada Libre was conceived as an Open Education Resource. This manual is designed in HTML because it is one of the most accessible formats. We made design choices to keep the content usable and accessible. Even so, LibreTexts and the H5P activities have some limitations at this time. For example, the current versions of drag and drop activities are not yet accessible. We hope to offer a wider variety of question types when there are better options. Please visit Entrada Libre Accessibility Information for details.

The manual is a work in progress and we welcome your constructive feedback.
