El primer viaje de Cristóbal Colón a América se inició el 3 de agosto de 1492. Cristóbal Colón nació en Génova, Italia, en 1451. Desde joven le interesó el mar y por eso se enlistó como marinero en un barco mercante. Recorrió el Mediterráneo y gran parte de los mares entonces conocidos, llegando en pocos años a ser un marino experto e ilustrado. Desde entonces, se dedicó a leer los mejores libros de geografía y conoció a los marinos más famosos. Atraído por las expediciones de Portugal fue allí y se quedó a vivir en Lisboa, donde formó el plan de ir a la India por mar. Por sus observaciones y por lo que había leído, estaba convencido de que la Tierra tenía una forma parecida a la de un huevo, y que navegando hacia Occidente se podía llegar a la India que estaba al Oriente. Cristóbal Colón informó a los Reyes Católicos de sus intenciones. Después de ocho años de paciente espera, alcanzó la protección de la reina Isabel, quien le proporcionó el dinero necesario para la expedición.
