my your his / her Your our your their |
il mio il tuo il suo il Suo il nostro il vostro il loro |
i miei i tuoi i suoi i Suoi i nostri i vostri i loro |
la mia la tua la sua la Sua la nostra la vostra la loro |
le mie le tue le sue le Sue le nostre le vostre le loro |
Examples in the masculine singular and plural forms:
- il mio letto / i miei letti
- il suo bagno / i suoi bagni
Examples in the feminine singular and plural forms:
- la nostra cucina / le nostre cucine
- la tua poltrona / le tue poltrone
The Family Member Exception:
You must always use the article with possessive adjectives. HOWEVER, when you refer to family members in the singular form [not plural], you DO NOT use the article with the possessive adjective. It doesn’t matter whose family we are considering: any family member follows this rule. Consider the examples:
- il mio divano vs. mio fratello
- la sua scrivania vs. sua madre
Three exceptions to the exception:
- Terms of endearment such as mamma, papà, fratellino and sorellinado require the article, i.e.: ilmiopapà, la mia sorellina.
- Loroalways requires the article, i.e.: illorozio; la loro zia.
- Adding specifications or descriptions to a family member requires the article, even if the family member is singular. Consider these examples:
- Mia zia vende case. vs. La mia zia napoletana vende case.
- Tuo fratello vive da solo? vs. Il tuo fratello maggiorevive da solo?
Pets and girlfriends/boyfriends do not count as family members, so they require the article:
- La nostra iguana è molto affettuosa.
- Il suo ragazzo è bello ma scemo.
The word famiglia is not a member of the family, and therefore requires the article:
- La mia famiglia è molto numerosa.
