Sur et sous

The prepositions sur and sous mean “on top of” and “under”, respectively, but they must always be followed by a noun:

sous la table

sur le toit

sous la direction du gérant

sur mon portable

Dessus et dessous

Another variation of these concepts are: dessus and dessous. These can only be used when a noun is already present (or mentioned). For example:

Voici la table. Mets tes livres dessus. (Here’s the table. Put your books on top [of it])

Tu vois ce lit-là. Mon argent est câché dessous. (See that bed there ? My money is hidden under it.)

Dessus and dessous are found in numerous adverbial phrases, such as:

au-dessus / au-dessous

là-dessus / là-dessous

par-dessus / par-dessous

ci-dessus / ci-dessous

Au-dessus (de) and au-dessous (de) are used to indicate a fixed object’s position: on top of, above / below, underneath. It can replace sur/sous or dessus/dessous. When they are followed by a noun, the preposition de must be placed in between.

Une famille française vit au-dessus de mon appartement. Personne ne vit au-dessous. (A French family lives above my apartment. No one lives below.)

Mon sac à dos est au-dessous de la table. Il n’y a rien dessus. (My backpack is under the table. There is nothing on top [of it].)

Là-dessus and là-dessous indicate that something that is "on top of or underneath something 'over there'" (=là):

Les crayons sont là-dessus. (The pencils are [on that thing] over there.)

Tu vois cette table ? Mets ton sac là-dessous. (See that table ? Put your bag under it [there].)

Par-dessus and par-dessous indicate a sense of movement and may or may not be followed by a noun.

Le chat est passé par-dessous la barrière. (The cat went under the fence.)

Il a sauté par-dessus. (He jumped over it.)

Ci-dessus and ci-dessous are used in writing. They indicate that something can be found above or below that point.

Note de Prononciation 

The most important thing to remember is that the difference in meaning between words referring to the “top /over / above” vs. words referring to the “bottom / below under” is the difference between the vowel sounds  ou and u.  It is fundamental to distinguish dessous from dessus.
