On étudie !
(a) The meaning of a verb can be modified by simply adding a preposition like à and de:
arriver (to arrive)
arrive à Paris (to arrive at Paris)
arriver de Paris (to arrive from Paris)
In this example, à means “to” and de means “from”. But it doesn’t always translate like this. For example, the English verb “to depend on” is “dépendre de” in French: “Ça dépend de toi.” (That depends on you) .
(b) Many verbs in French always require a preposition de to express a specific meaning. We have already seen how the verb jouer (to play) can mean different things when followed by à vs. de:
jouer (to play)
jouer à + un sport, un jeu (to play a sport, a game)
jouer de + un instrument de musique (to play a musical instrument)
Another example we have seen is venir (to come):
Venir (to come)
Venir de + [infinitif] = to have just done something
(c) Here are a few more examples of verbs that change meaning when followed by à or de.
Français | Anglais | Exemples |
---|---|---|
parler | to talk, to speak | Nous parlons souvent. /Nous parlons espagnol. |
parler à* (qqn) | to talk/ speak to or with (someone) | Nathalie parle à Jean. |
parler de (quelqu’un/de quelque chose) | to talk/speak about someone or something | Elle parle de son copain. |
Parler à: Avoir une conversation avec la personne. On peut aussi dire parler avec quelqu’un.
Français | Anglais | Exemples |
---|---|---|
manquer | to lack, to miss | Les données manquent. |
manquer à (qqn) | to miss (someone) | Anne manque à Paul (Paul misses Anne) |
manquer de (qqch/qqn) | to lack or miss something |
Abdou manque de conviction (Abdou lacks conviction) |
Manquer à:
(a) in French it is reversed. You are actually saying that Anne “is lacking to” Paul
(b) the à makes Paul an indirect object. If we use an indirect object pronoun, we would say “Anne lui manque” (He misses her)]
The expression “il manque de..” means something is missing. It is an impersonal use of manquer de]
Français | Anglais | Exemples |
---|---|---|
apprendre | to learn | J’apprends l’italien. |
apprendre (qqch) à (qqn) | to teach (something) to (someone) | Le prof lui apprend à compter avec les doigts. |
apprendre de | to learn from (something) | Nous avons appris de nos erreurs/nos expériences. |
apprendre sur | to learn about | Il reste beaucoup à apprendre sur la biologie. |
Français | Anglais | Exemples |
---|---|---|
continuer | to continue | Je continue mes études. |
continuer à |
to continue an action. |
Nous continuons à lire l’article. |
continuer de |
to continue a habit or routine |
Vous continuez de faire du sport tous les soirs ? |
Voici une page qui explique la différence très subtile entre « continuer à » et « continuer de ».
