In this section, you will learn how to pronounce « -il » and « -ill »

Le graphème ill se prononce avec un yod, /ij/ ou /j/ selon le contexte:

Est-ce qu’il y a une consonne (C) ou une voyelle (V) avant?

- - C + ill-: on prononce /ij/, comme dans fille, famille, habiller, brillant.

- - V + ill-: on prononce la voyelle suivie d’un yod (/j/), comme dans taille, travailler, feuille, bouteille, grenouille.

Les lettres il suivies d’une voyelle se prononcent avec /l/, comme dans le, facile, kilo.

LL

On peut prononcer la double consonne ll de deux manières:

[ l ] :(L sound): laugh, bill, Californie

[ j ] :(Y sound): you, tanya, coyote

LL comme [ j ]

In all letter combinations with vowel + ill, the double l is pronounced [ j ]: voyelle + ill è [ j ] = like “y” in “yes” or “player”

ill = /ij/ ou /j/

Double l is also pronounced [ j ] in most words with consonant + -ill, including

LL as [ l ]

After any other vowel, the double L is pronounced [ l ]: voyelle + ll è [ l ] = like “l” in “less” or “ball”

il + V = /il/

It is also pronounced [ l ] after i in about two dozen words (and their derivatives).

Exceptions:

mille, ville et tranquille se prononcent avec /il/, ainsi que les mots apparents (million, village, tranquillement, etc.). De même pour les noms propres Gilles et Lille (nom d’une ville française).
