How can you describe the weather in French?

The video below will show you how to ask and answer about three different types of weather.

Understanding French weather terms is useful for deciding what to wear, planning what to do, and so on. The French word for weather is le temps, and the primary verb used to talk about the weather is faire; more specifically, the impersonal il fait.

You have already seen the verb faire in expressions like faire la fête (to party), faire une promenade (to take a walk), or faire les courses (to go shopping). Here is how we conjugate faire:

Most of the time faire means either to do or to make. Thus, the question qu'est-ce que tu aimes faire ? could mean What do you like to do? or What do you like to make? depending on the context. There are also a variety of expressions with faire (like the ones mentioned above) that do not translate as to do or to make. Talking about the weather is one example.

For an English speaker, the French equivalent of How’s the weather? looks like you're saying What weather is it doing, making?

A word by word translation does not work here, so you need to memorize the entire expression.

The word temps also has multiple meanings, depending on the context. Compare, for example:

Je n'ai pas de temps à perdre. (I don't have time to lose.)

Il fait beau temps. (It's nice weather.)

So, always pay attention to context!

In English, we say It is a nice day, It is raining, It's cold, etc. but what exactly is it? This is called an impersonal subject pronoun. There are three ways to respond to the question Quel temps fait-il ? and they all begin with the impersonal subject pronoun Il.

*The French use Celsius for weather, so for example il fait 30° would mean that it’s 86°F, not below freezing. You can convert from Celsius to Farenheit with this formula: F = (C x 1.8) + 32. Convert from Farenheit to Celsius with this formula: C = (F - 32) x 0.56.

When it’s really cold you could use the idiomatic expression: Il fait un froid de canard. What would you say in English? Compare this expression to similar ones in other languages here: Expression.fr.

When it’s pouring rain you can use expressions like: Il pleut des hallebardes. Explore similar expressions here: Expression.fr.

Most of the time, you cannot talk about normal weather conditions with être (to be), but you can identify weather related things, with C'est... or Il y a.... Here are some extreme weather conditions and natural disasters:

You can also sometimes describe the sky, the day or some other noun with être, such as:
