    23 CLOCK TIME

Following is a listing of all the expressions regarding clock time that you are likely to need at this level.

Quelle heure est-il? What time is it?
Il est une heure. It's one o'clock.
Il est (trois)21 heures. It is (three) o'clock.
Il est (deux) heures et demie22. It's half past (two).
Il est (cinq) heures et quart. It's a quarter past (five).
Il est (sept) heures moins le quart. It's a quarter to (seven).
Il est (huit) heures (dix)23. It's (eight) ten.
Il est (six) heures moins (deux)24. It's two minutes to six.
    Il est midi. It's noon.
    Il est minuit. It's midnight.
... du matin. ... in the morning. (a.m.)
    ... de l'après-midi. ... in the afternoon. (p.m.)
... du soir. ... in the evening. (p.m.)

21 Fill in any cardinal numeral between 2 (deux) and 11 (onze) or—for "army" time—between 2 (deux) or 24 (vingt-quatre). Except when using 24-hour official time, the French tend to avoid douze for "twelve o'clock" and prefer midi and minuit.

22 There is an -e on demi to agree with heure, except when it follows midi or minuit, which are both masculine. Minor point.

23 Use any cardinal numeral from 1 (une) to S9 (cinquante-neuf), without anything between it and the word "heure(s)".

24 Use any cardinal numeral between 1 (une) and 29 (vingt-neuf), directly after moins (no article).
