13 THE VERB: CAUSATIVE CONSTRUCTIONS (LE CAUSATIF)

The verb faire + INFINITIVE is the typical causative construction in French ("to have someone do something" or "to have something done"). This is definitely not a first-year level construction and we will simply give a few examples here, without explanation.

Napoléon a fait bâtir l'Arc de Triomphe. Napoleon had the Arc de Triomphe built.
Faites entrer les étudiants. Have the students come in.
Tu vas lui faire répéter le cours? You're going to have him repeat the course?
