Review the discussion of the purpose of the Intégration units at the beginning of Intégration: 1-3.
Lexique
As in Intégration: 1-3, we give you two lists for each part of speech, one consisting of words you are expected to know and be able to use on your own, and one c (insisting of words that you'll have to recognize in reading, dictations, and aural comprehensions, but will not be asked to produce.
If you don't already know them, you should learn the words in each (a) group. (Test yourself by copying the words in English, then try to give the French equivalent, or—if you wisely made flash cards—use them now to test yourself.) As for the words in the (b) group, scan them frequently and feel free to use them on your own, as appropriate, in compositions or creative exercises, but don't spend time trying to memorize them.
A useful exercise that we strongly recommend is to make lists by semantic category: separate lists for words that refer to the family, professions, parts of the body, animals, or classroom objects, and so on. Choose your own categories and include words from both the (a) and (b) lists. Save your lists and add to them as new words are introduced in later chapters. It is an excellent way of paying attention to the meaning of these words in context because they are related to other words. Again, if you have already made flash cards and continued to add to them, you will find it easy to arrange them in various groups. Some instructors may ask you to turn this work in; others may do in-class exercises with the lists.
NOMS
(a) Nouns you have used.
The number in parentheses refers to the chapter in which the word was introduced: 0 for the Introductory Chapter, 1, 2, and so forth for the corresponding chapters. Some of the words now marked (4), (5), or (6) were first listed in the "b" lists of Intégration: 1-3. We also repeat other words from those "b" lists, now marked with an (A). You should know these now by dint of repetition in various contexts.

Exercices
1. (Refer to the dialogues and the related exercises you did in Chapitres 4 and 5.) Using a métro plan and a guide to monuments and places of interest, write two dialogues. First, assume you are at a hotel near the Raspail stop on the subway and that you are asking the hotel clerk how to get to the following places: la Comédie Française (le Théâtre National), le Musée d'Orsay, le cimetière du Père Lachaise, plus two places you choose yourself. Ask the appropriate questions, give the answers, and include one or two comments for each location. Second, assume you are a guide on a walking tour of the Ile de la Cité and nearby locations on the left bank. Choose your own itinerary, then direct and inform your tourists, using the vocabulary we have provided.
2. Imagine you are showing photographs of your family and friends to a group of new friends at a hostel in France. Tell them two or three things about each person. Describe at least five people.
Example. Voici mon oncle. C'est le frère de ma mère. Il est avocat et il est très riche. Mon père n'aime pas mon oncle, mais il est souvent chez nous.
Do not make it any more complex than that!
3. Now imagine that the other people at the hostel have taken out their family photographs Ask at least six questions about the people one of your friends points out. following these models:
C'est ton frère? Quel âge a-t-il? Ta sœur habite à Paris? Tiens! Je vais à Paris demain. Quel est son numéro de téléphone?
4. Read the following poems, following a pattern similar to the one we recommended for reading prose passages: work on one poem at a time, read it quickly two or three times before attempting to determine meanings oi words you don't know, and check the dictionary only when necessary. It is particularly important when working with poetry to read the whole poem all the way through a number of times.
