Vocabulaire
At the end of each chapter you will find a listing of new words introduced in that chapter, grouped by traditional parts of speech, and with pertinent information, like gender. The translation given will be the meaning(s) of that word as used in the chapter (and, to the best of our control, throughout the book). This is not a complete dictionary: Each French word, like an English word, may have many meanings Only a good dictionary (like Harrap's New College French and English Dictionary) will give you a satisfactory set of meanings, with contexts and necessary explanations. Please avoid paperback dictionaries (except the paperback edition of Harrap's).
These lists will include only those words that we expect you to know for production It will not include the Expressions utiles that we expect you to memorize as fixed forms, nor will it include words that we or your instructor may introduce for comprehension only. The lists at the end of every third chapter will contain the "comprehension only" words. All words used in the book, whether for production or for comprehension only, are listed and translated in the appendix.
