This book would not have been possible without the support and contributions of a number of organizations and individuals, and I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who provided assistance.

First, I acknowledge the support of the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills, and Training and the Senior Academic Administrators’ Forum (SAAF).

At Coast Mountain College, I am grateful to Justin Kohlman, Vice-President, Education, Student Development, and International, and to Dr. Laurie Waye, Dean of Instruction, for giving me the opportunity to write this book and for their ongoing support. I would also like to thank the faculty and staff of NWCC for introducing me to their classes and for sharing their insights into the needs of the students who will be using this book: Dean of Learning Transformation Dr. Carrie Nolan; faculty members Mercedes de la Nuez, Rich de Rooy, John Dyck, Richard Jenne, Kim McIntyre, Julie Morris, Gord Urban, and Stella Webster; and Bookstore Coordinator Tracey Hoffos.

The ten units in this book have benefitted from contributions from the following people:

    ·        Ron Venzi, who allowed me to reproduce text from his website in Unit 3.

    ·        Sophie Milburn and Ken Lackman, who contributed narratives to Unit 4.

    ·        Nathaniel P. Wilkerson and Joanna Rogers, who allowed me to interview them and to reproduce their art in Unit 5. Also the Ted Harrison Foundation, who gave permission to reproduce Ted Harrison’s paintings in the same unit.

    ·        Tom Milburn, who contributed both readings in Unit 6.

    ·        Cait Flanders and Joshua Becker, who allowed me to reproduce their texts in Unit 7.

    ·        Jordan Vlasschaert of Shred Kelly, who agreed to be interviewed for Unit 8.

    ·        Jean Chong, who allowed me to reproduce her article and photographs in Unit 9.

I would like to thank Tom Milburn for his many valuable suggestions and for editing and proofreading the manuscript. I also thank book designer Stephen Tiano for bringing my words to life on the page.

Finally, to the students of Coast Mountain College and throughout B.C.: your stories and your resilience inspire me, and I wish you every success.
