- aerial perspective

a visual technique that shows objects in the distance as bluer, hazier, and less distinct.
- anterior

the topmost part of the plant, where the shoot system emerges to create stem, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruits
- bleed

Extending the image past a trim line so that the illustration prints to the edge of a page.
- chromolithograph

a color print made using the lithographic process with multiple stones or plates, each inked in a different color. Made popular in the second half of the 19th century.
- CMYK

Cyan Magenta Yellow and Key (Black); a color profile often used for printing as it matches the primary colors of ink
- codex

a medieval bound manuscript book, made by hand

a digital designation used for printing; generally, images can be saved in grayscale, CMYK (for printing), or RGB (for web)
- copyright

- cross-hatching

Rendering with short parallel marks, with a second layer being applied at roughly a ninety degree angle to the first layer of marks.
- DPI

Dots per inch; refers to the number of dots of ink or pixels that can fit in one square inch.
- end pages

- ephemera

Items that are not meant to last, such as artworks on paper.
- exclusive rights

Exclusive rights grant a sole and unique authority to an individual or entity, allowing them to control the use, distribution, or commercialization of a specific work, property, or asset.
- fixative

a spray that helps to set easily-smeared media, like pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, or pastel
- frame

a box used to define a moment in time in a sequential narrative, like a comic, graphic novel, or picture book
- friable

A medium that crumbles easily and so tends to smear on your support easily, like charcoal, pencil, or chalk pastels.

Art licensing is the process where an artist grants a third party the right to use their artwork for specific purposes, usually for reproduction on products or in other commercial contexts, in exchange for payment. It's essentially "renting" your art to a company for a defined period and set of uses, while you retain the copyright.

- pentimenti

The visible lines made in a drawing or painting before the final lines of the work are found. From the Italian for "repentance", signifying that the artist has changed their mind.

- resolution

Red/Green/Blue; the colors of light. This is a color profile used for web applications.
- royalty

The area on a printable object where nothing will be trimmed
- screen-printing

a printing technique that utilizes a mesh screen to transfer ink onto a substrate, with a stencil blocking out areas that should not be printed.
- sequential narrative

A story taking place in a sequence of images: this can refer to film, illustrated books, or storyboards.
- species

specific name of the type of plant, often given in a Latin designation
- specifications

technical details regarding an image: color, size, font choices, bleed information, and file type are common aspects of specifications.
- splash

an illustration that takes up an entire single page
- spot

an illustration meant to work in conjunction with text on the same page. Spots can sit anywhere on the page: as chapter headers, borders, or in the right or left margins.

A single illustration that covers two pages of a book. Sometimes called a double page spread.
