Participó activamente en batallas estratégicas, llegando al grado de Coronel en el ejército colombiano. Después de que estas naciones obtuvieron su independencia de España, Manuela fue parte del gobierno, especialmente a partir de su relación con Simón Bolívar, pero fue rechazada y desterrada por sus contemporáneos. Su papel histórico ha sido reivindicado desde mediados del siglo XX, y hoy se considera una figura heroica de las naciones andinas.
