These next two chapters address vocal music from Ancient Greece to the late 19th century. As these works all have singers and therefore include a written text, they all depict some type of story.
This chapter addresses smaller individual works that tell individual stories, covering music from ancient Greece through the 19th century.
The following chapter addresses vocal works that are part of a larger staged dramatic work—opera—and will address music from the Baroque, Classical, mid- and late-19th century.
You'll notice that the Classical Era is not represented in this chapter—that is because the following chapter will cover Classical vocal music, using opera as its demonstration.
