    Subjuntivo: verbos para expresar emociones

The subjunctive is also used to express emotions or feelings towards the actions of other people or towards a situation. Thus, the subject in the main (first) clause must be different then the subject in the subordinate (second) clause.

    Fórmula

Verb or expression of emotion in indicative + que + subjunctive

    Verbos para expresar emoción

The main clause must be in indicative mode and refer to the people expressing their feelings. The subordinate clause must be preceded by the word "que" and indicate the action or situation to which the subject in the main clause is reacting. The verb in the subordinate clause must be conjugated in subjunctive to the second subject.

    Verbs and Expressions of Emotion
    Español Inglés
    es extraño it's strange
es una lástima it's a shame
    es ridículo it's ridiculous
es sorprendente it's surprising; it's amazing
    es triste it's sad
    esperar to hope; to wish
    ojalá* hopefully; to hope
sentir to be sorry; to regret
    temer to be afraid
tener miedo de to be afraid of

*Ojalá is an impersonal expression, not a verb. It does not need to be conjugated and there is no other form of this word.

    Ejemplos

    • Ojalá que tengas un buen fin de semana. (Hopefully you have a good weekend.)
    • Los niños tienen miedo de que los fantasmas existan. (Children are afraid that ghosts exist.)
    • Es sorprendente que esté lloviendo en julio. (It's surprising that it's raining in July.)

    Práctica 1

Verbos para expresar emoción: conjuga como "gustar"

Verbs that are conjugated like "gustar" are often used with the subjunctive to indicate what a person likes or dislikes about the actions of others or a situation. Remember, these verbs must be conjugated to what is liked, in this case an action or verb that is explained in the second clause, so the conjugation must always be in the third person singular form (me gusta, te alegra, le sorprende, etc.). Never use the plural conjugation of these verbs.

Verbs of Emotion Conjugated as "Gustar"
    Español Inglés
    alegrar to be happy
    chocar to bother
    entristecer to be sad
    fascinar to be fascinated
    gustar to like
    interesar to be interested
    molestar to bother
    sorprender to be surprised

    Ejemplos

    • Me alegra que salga el sol. (It makes me happy for the sun come out.)
    • Me molesta que esté nublado. (It bothers me that it's cloudy.)
    • A Luisa le gusta que Pedro venga con ella. (Luisa likes that Pedro comes with her.)
