    Subjuntivo: recomendaciones y sugerencias

The subjunctive is used to make recommendations and suggestions to others. The main clause (first clause) must use an impersonal expression or a verb of will and influence in the present indicative. This clause is used to affect the actions of other people. The subordinate clause (second clause) must be conjugated in present subjunctive and it indicates the actions that are being suggested to the other person. These two clauses must be separated by the word "que".

    Verbos de voluntad e influencia

Verbs of will and influence are used in the main clause of sentences that use the subjunctive. The subordinate clause uses the subjunctive to tell other people what the subject in the main clause wants them to do. The verb in the main clause must be conjugated in present indicative. The subject in the main clause must be the person making the suggestion or recommendation.

On the other hand, the subject in the subordinate clause must refer to the person receiving the suggestion or recommendation. The verb in the subordinate clause must be conjugated to its subject in the present subjunctive.

    Fórmula

Verb of will and influence in present indicative + que + subjunctive

Note: The subject of the subordinate clause cannot be the same used in the main clause.

    Verbs of Will and Influence
    Español Inglés
    desear to whish; to desire
    necesitar to need
    preferir to prefer
    querer to want

    Ejemplos

    • Pedro quiere que sus amigos vengan a su fiesta. (Pedro wants his friends to come to his party.)
    • Los amigos de Pedro prefieren que él vaya a su casa. (Pedro's friends prefer that he goes to their house.)

Note that the subject of the main clause is different then the subject of the subordinate clause in each of these examples. Remember, if you do not change the subject, the word "que" and the present subjunctive are not needed.

    Práctica 1

Some verbs of will and influence need to be preceded by an indirect object pronoun. The indirect object pronoun must refer to the subject of the subordinate clause. For example, if "te" is used in the main clause, preceding the verb, the second subject must be "tú" and the verb in subjunctive must be conjugated in "tú" form.

Verbs of Will and Influence Used with Indirect Object Pronouns
    Español Inglés
    aconsejar to advise
    insistir to insist
    mandar to order; to command
    pedir to ask for
    prohibir to prohibit
    recomendar to recommend
    rogar to beg
    sugerir to suggest

    Ejemplos

    • Mis amigos me aconsejan que yo estudie mucho. (My friends advise me to study a lot.)
    • Los profesores de Adela le recomiendan que empiece a buscar trabajo antes de graduarse. (Adela's professors recommend her to start looking for a job before she graduates.)

Note that these examples use the indirect object pronoun before the verb of the main clause. This pronoun refers to the subject in the subordinate clause; thus, an explicit subject is not required in the second clause.

In the first example, "me", indicated in bold, before the verb "aconsejan" indicates that I am receiving the advice. Since the pronoun refers to me, the subject in the subordinate clause must be "yo".

In the second example, the indirect object is "le", explicitily referring to "Adela". She is the person receiving the recommendation and the implicit subject of the subordinate clause.
