    Preface

Together, with the support of Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) and Delmar Larsen and his team at Libretexts, we created thisWriting and Critical Thinking Through Literature all-in-one textbook, writing guide, and anthology to replace the often cost-prohibitive textbooks currently assigned in most introductory literature courses (C-ID ENGL 110 and 120). Our main goals in this project were to make the study of literature more

    • Affordable
    • Accessible
    • Equitable
    • Culturally Relevant

To achieve these goals, we attempted to convey a more personal, conversational tone, like we are meeting with students in our office hours. We incorporated cultural reference points and language actually used by students, for example, examining the ways popular music artists, memes, tweets, and video games might be relevant to the study of literature. Lastly, we attempted to create a balance between canonical texts and exciting, diverse, contemporary literature.

If this textbook fails to meet your needs in any way, please accept our apologies and send your suggestions for improvement to Heather.Ringo@Solano.edu. The best part of this textbook is that it is a community-based textbook in that it was created out of the feedback and needs of many different students and faculty. It is a living, breathing textbook which continues to evolve based on your feedback. Whether a student, educator, or casual reader, we look forward to hearing your ideas!
