El pretérito perfecto simple (también llamado "pretérito indefinido" o solo "pretérito") del modo indicativo representa hechos terminados en el pasado, sin importar si es reciente o remoto:
Ayer hablé con mi amiga Laura.
    Colón nació en 1451.

The Simple Preterite Perfect of the Indicative Mood (also called Indefinite Preterite or just Preterite) is used to represent facts that were finished in the past, no matter how recent or remote (Simple Past in English):
I talked to my friend Laura yesterday.
    Columbus was born in 1451.

    Formas regulares

Por regla general, los verbos se conjugan en el pretérito cambiando la terminación del infinitivo (-ar, -er, -ir) para cada persona, así: As a general rule, verbs are conjugated in the Preterite by changing the infinitive endings (-ar, -er, -ir) for each person, as follows:
(persona) -ar -er, -ir hablar comer vivir
    yo hablé comí viví
tú, vos -aste -iste hablaste comiste viviste
usted, él, ella -ió habló com viv
nosotros/as -amos -imos hablamos comimos vivimos
vosotros/as -asteis -isteis hablasteis comisteis vivisteis
ustedes, ellos/as -aron -ieron hablaron comieron vivieron

    Verbos parcialmente irregulares

    2. Regular verbs ending in -car, -gar, -guar, and -zar have a spelling change in the first person singular (yo) to maintain the pronunciation of the stem according to Spanish consistent system (see §02):
    buscar: busqué • llegar: llegué
    averiguar: averié • empezar: empecé

    3. The 3rd person singular and plural of -er and -ir verbs whose stems end in a vowel, will end in -yó and -yeron:
caer: cayó, cayeron • construir: construyó, construyeron
creer: creyó, creyeron destruir: destruyó, destruyeron
influir: influyó, influyeron • leer: leyó, leyeron oír: oyó, oyeron

    4. Todos los verbos en -ir con alteración vocálica cambian -o-u y -e-i en la tercera persona singular y plural (ver §09):
dormir: durmió, durmieron • morir: murió, murieron
repetir: repitió, repitieron • divertir: divirtió, divirtieron

    4. All -ir stem-changing verbs change -o to -u or -e to -i in the third person singular and plural of the preterite (see §09):
dormir: durmió, durmieron • morir: murió, murieron
repetir: repitió, repitieron • divertir: divirtió, divirtieron

    5. Los verbos reír y sonreír son levemente irregulares:
reí, reíste, rio, reímos, reísteis, rieron
sonreí, sonreíste, sonrió, sonreímos, sonreísteis, sonrieron

    5. The slightly irregular forms of reír and sonreír are as follows:
reí, reíste, rio, reímos, reísteis, rieron
sonreí, sonreíste, sonrió, sonreímos, sonreísteis, sonrieron

    6. Los verbos terminados en -ducir (conducir, deducir, inducir, introducir, producir, reducir, traducir...) son totalmente irregulares:
produje, produjiste, produjo, produjimos, produjisteis, produjeron
La sílaba tónica es la penúltima (como indica el subrayado).

    6. Verbs ending in -ducir (conducir, deducir, inducir, introducir, producir, reducir, traducir...) are totally irregular in the Preterite:
produje, produjiste, produjo, produjimos, produjisteis, produjeron
The second-to-last syllable is stressed (underlined above).

The Simple Preterite Perfect represents finished events, completed "over there" in the past ("complete" events; this is why it's a "perfect" tense):
They visited me three times last year.
Did you finally decide to attend the conference?
They brought the package last night.

    • This includes sequences of actions completed one after another:
I opened the door, got in and sat down.

    • It also includes narrating actions that clearly began and/or ended "over there" in the past (within a finite time frame, seen as complete):
    Gloria worked there since 1980.
Julius Caesar lived for fifity-seven years.
    They talked until twelve midnight.

Observe el aspecto perfecto (acciones completas, definitivas) que comunica el pretérito:

Viajé a la ciudad de Guatemala en marzo del año pasado para trabajar con un grupo de niños. (se completó la acción de viajar en un marco de tiempo)

En el aeropuerto, tuve que pasar por el control de inmigración. (tuve que: en realidad pasamos por el control)
El oficial hizo muchas preguntas pero no pudo entender la razón de mi visita. (no pudo: nunca entendió realmente)

I traveled to Guatemala last year in March to work with a group of children. (completed action within a time frame)

At the airport, I had to go through immigration control. (tuvimos que: had to and did)
The officer asked many question, but was unable to understand the reason for my visit. (
no pudo: he couldn't and didn't)
I tried to explain him, but he refused to listen. (
quise: I wanted and did try to; no quiso: he refused, never did)
But he finally stamped my passport and I managed to arrive in the child center. (
pude: I indeed was able to; managed to)

I spent two weeks with the children and I learned a lot from them. (completed actions within a time frame)
When I came back, I told my friends all of the details of my trip. (a sequence of completed actions: coming back and telling)

    Traducción al inglés
Yesterday, I went to the library and decided to read for a while. So, I looked for a book reserved for the Spanish class, and I continued my reading on the history of Spain. According to what I read yesterday, the Muslims from North Africa invaded Hispania in the year 711 and, in a few years, conquered most of the peninsula. The Christian Visigoths had to refuge in the north, but for eight centuries kept the determination to reconquer the country. The Muslims put their administrative center in the city of Cordoba, which became an intellectual center for the Islamic culture. One of the heroes of the Christian reconquest was El Cid. Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar was born near Burgos, and died heroically in the year 1099. Many medieval trovadors sang to the heroism of this character, showing how a small army managed to defeat an empire with hundreds of thousands of warriors. Almost two hundred years later, in the 12th century, the Song of Mio Cid appeared, which was one of the first books published in Spanish language. This reading seemed interesting to me, and gave me a lot to think of.
