The Korean Activity Book 1 is designed to provide various useful materials for practicing Korean. This book is ideal for learners at the Novice Low to Novice High levels who want to practice writing and pronouncing hangeul, communicate in Korean by creating sentences using basic grammar and vocabulary, and understand and create simple conversations that are useful in everyday conversations. The Korean Activity Book 1 is not a textbook, so it does not include lengthy explanations on grammar or vocabulary. However, it includes a lot of resources of natural conversations and useful vocabularies that are commonly used in contemporary Korean. It also includes useful tips to clarify confusing structures and words & expressions to novice level learners.
The organization of this book follows Integrated Korean Beginning 1, published by the University of Hawaii Press, which is the textbook in use at the University of Iowa. However, learners who are using any textbook can make use of the Korean Activity Book 1 because it includes most basic grammar, vocabulary, and discourse information that are essential to beginning level students.
Key features include:
- cartoons that vividly show the contexts of the conversations
- images that help visualization of the concepts of the vocabularies
- abundant examples from which learners can inductively understand the sentence structures
- accompanying sound files and video clips, which can be accessed online, for listening comprehension
The publication of this book has been supported by the Open Educational Resources (OER) funding by the University of Iowa Library. OER are free for students and carry legal permission for open use. We hope many educators and learners of Korean make use of The Korean Activity Book 1 for their class and/or self-study.
