On étudie !
Le futur proche
You already know how to talk about things you are going to do in the future by using the verb aller in infinitive constructions :
On va sortir ce soir. Nous allons faire les magasins. (We are going to go out tonight. We are going to go shopping.)
Ils vont débattre du réchauffement climatique aujourd'hui. (They are going to discuss global warming today.)
This is sometimes called the immediate or near future (le futur proche) since it is used more often for events in the near future. However, it can be used to talk about the distant future too:
Je vais être avocat quand je serai grand. (I am going to be a lawyer when I grow up.)
Next, we will learn how to use the futur simple (future tense). You can already see the difference in this example.
future proche futur simple
Je vais être avocat. Je serai avocat. (I’m going to be a lawyer. I will be a lawyer.)
Let’s take a closer look…
Le futur simple
In English we place the word will before an infinitive to make it about the future (e.g., I will buy a cake for her, I promise; They will show up sooner or later).
(a) To form the future tense in French, add the endings below to the future stem.
(1) For most verbs, the future stem is just the infinitive. Thus, the stem of finir is finir-.
(2) Infinitives ending in -re drop the final -e before adding the future endings.
Sujet | Parler | Finir | Prendre |
---|---|---|---|
je | parlerai | finirai | prendrai |
tu | parleras | finiras | prendras |
il/elle/on | parlera | finira | prendra |
nous | parlerons | finirons | prendrons |
vous | parlerez | finirez | prendrez |
ils/elles | parleront | finiront | prendront |
Je finirai mon livre ce week-end. (I will finish my book this weekend.)
Tu comprendras mieux dans un an. (You’ll understand better a year from now.)
Nous parlerons au président la semaine prochaine. (We will talk to the president next week.)
As you can see, the futur simple does not have to be about a distant future either. The decision to use the futur proche vs. the futur simple is the same one we make in English between I am going to have a drink and I will have a drink. You have to decide which is best suited to what you are trying to say in that specific context.
(b) Of course, some verbs form the future tense with irregular stems:
Infinitif | Radical | Exemples |
---|---|---|

(After graduating, I will take a trip to Latin America.)
Nous aurons trois enfants un jour. (We will have three children someday.)
Je suis sûr que tout le monde voudra se reposer demain. (I am sure that everyone will want to rest tomorrow.)
Quand tu seras là, on pourra faire de la musique. (When you are here, we will be able to make some music.)
(c) There is a situation in which you will use the future tense in French where you would normally use the present tense in English.
When a future action follows quand (when), we use the future tense. Compare the following:
When she gets here, we will turn off the lights and hide.
Quand elle arrivera ici, nous éteindrons les lumières et nous nous cacherons.
In addition to quand, the future tense is used after lorsque (when), aussitôt que (as soon as) and dès que (as soon as).
Quand j’aurai du temps, j'irai faire une randonnée dans les montagnes. (When I have some time, I will go hiking in the mountains.)
Nous commencerons le match dès que Michel arrivera. (We will begin the game as soon as Michel gets here.)
Vous pourrez partir aussitôt que la pièce finira. (You can leave as soon as the play ends.)
Quand tu viendras nous rendre visite, on te fera visiter la ville. (When you come visit us, we will show you around town.)
(d) To talk about a length of time between you and the future event, you can use the preposition dans, just like the English in.
Bobby va déménager dans un mois. (Bobby is moving in a month.)
Salomon rentrera en Californie dans quelques semaines. (Salomon will go back to California in a few weeks.)
Dans trois ans j’obtiendrai mon diplôme. (In three years, I will graduate.)
