Lexique
Don't let these long lists discourage you—you know many of the words already. Our purpose is not to weigh you down but to provide a reference tool for exercises in the Intégration unit, as well as in subsequent chapters.
The lists are no longer divided as they were in the first two Intégration units. This time we "flag" the more common words (those you should be able to produce on your own) by not giving their English equivalents.
Just looking at these lists will help you immensely in finding things to say in exercises for which you are to provide the content. It is certainly much easier than going back through previous chapters to get vocabulary ideas and is better than using the glossary at the end of the book, which is too large for the moment for these purposes.

Exercices
1. Remember the list of items you drew up for Intégration: 1-3? Let's do something similar, but a bit more complex. Name some things you own, or that are in your room or at your home, and describe them briefly. Then tell us who gave them to you or to whom you are going to give them.
Mention at least five items. Take one item at a time and write three or four sentences about it. (Use the vocabulary lists for ideas; you may use a dictionary if you can't say what you want to say with the words available to you thus far, but always read the entire definition, with examples, that is given in a good dictionary.)
Write your answers out on separate paper and be ready to read them—and answer questions about them—in class.
2. "Cause and effect." Think of situations or activities that would cause you (or someone else) to be cold or thirsty, to need something, or to be right or wrong. Now state that one or more of these causes occurred or is occurring and tell us what the result will be.
(Causes: didn't eat breakfast; can't eat at noon. Result: is going to be hungry this evening.)
Obviously, we're focusing on the avoir expressions discussed in Chapitre Sept, but you can mention results that involve other constructions, such as Elle va être fatiguée. You are limited only by your imagination, a reasonable adherence to cause-and-effect logic, and acceptable grammar.
Write six cause-and-effect sets on separate paper.
3. "Who did what, when?" Or, "who was doing what, when?" Make up six questions, three that ask what happened at some time in the past, and three that ask what someone was doing or used to do at some time in the past.
Models: (what happened...) (what was happening...)
Review the vocabulary lists to get ideas. Don't just go back to the discussion of the imperfect and the passé composé and select sentences from the chapter exercises.
Make up questions that are appropriate to ask your classmates (perhaps one for your instructor), questions that mean something to you. Write them on a separate sheet of paper and be ready to ask them in class.
4. "Do this, do that." Make up five commands (at least four of which should be directed at fellow students, but some of you should inclucie one for the instructor) and be ready to issue them in class. Be sure to set a context if necessary (for example, if you want to say: "Taisez-vous!," you'll first have to tell two or three students to start talking. "Parle à Jean," "Parle à Marie." "Parle à Philippe").
5. The following lecture is somewhat longer than those you have met so far. It is excerpted from the beginning of Voltaire's Candide, and thus fits the "literature" aspect of the motif for Chapitres 7-9, but—as you may know—Candide does quite a bit of traveling in this eighteenth century conte, thus making this a good transition to the next set of chapters, whose motif is "travel."
When assigned a relatively long passage like this one, it is extremely important for you to employ the strategy we recommended in Chapitre Trois: read the entire passage quickly first (scan it), then read it a bit more slowly, but still not laboring over individual sentences and not looking up words. Read it a third time with care, checking words. All those readings should be done a few days ahead of the day on which the passage will be discussed. Finally, reread the passage rapidly the evening before the due date.
Situation. Candide is a very young man, adopted by a wealthy baron. He is treated like a son and attends tutoring sessions along with the baron's son and daughter. Pangloss, the tutor, is a very important character, as becomes evident in the extract we have chosen. Unfortunately, Cunégonde, the baron's daughter, takes one of Pangloss's lessons too much to heart and Candide starts his travels in an ignominious fashion.
| 0 chiseled 0 therefore 0 pigs 0 foolish thing |
| 0 prît... had the nerve 0 concluded/happiness |
| 0 laissa... dropped 0 picked up 0 knees 0 fainted/slapped |
