Review and Role-Play at the Italian Bar

Ordering at an Italian bar is more than just asking for a drink. It’s a moment of culture, connection, and history.

In the following activities, you’ll apply what you’ve learned about vocabulary, grammar, and bar etiquette by exploring real menus and simulating real conversations.

    Learning Objectives
    • Practice vocabulary related to food, drink, and typical items found in an Italian bar

    • Simulate real-life ordering experiences through structured conversations and role plays

    • Use common expressions to ask about prices and place an order

    • Apply correct indefinite and definite articles in context

Cultural Note: More Than Just Coffee

Some of Italy’s most iconic cafés — known as caffè storici or caffè letterari — have long been places where artists, writers, and intellectuals met to share ideas. In the 1800s and 1900s, these bars were cultural centers where poetry, politics, and philosophy were part of everyday conversation.

Today, Italy continues to celebrate its café culture. Each year, the food and wine guide Gambero Rosso publishes a list of the best bars in Italy based on quality, service, and innovation.
