    Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills series consists of 69 black-and-white photographs in which the artist posed as various female characters. Created during the 1970s growing feminist movement, the series explores how women are portrayed in film and media. By imitating stereotypical roles such as the housewife, the femme fatale, or the career woman, Sherman revealed how identity is constructed through images.

    The innovation of this series was Sherman's use of photography and performance to question representation itself. Each photograph looks like a frame from an old movie, yet none are from real films. This blurred the line between reality and fiction, and forced viewers to see how images shape expectations of women. By starring in her own photographs, Sherman showed that identity could be put on and taken off like a costume.

    The impact has been lasting. Sherman’s work is central to feminist art and postmodern theory, influencing artists who question gender, identity, and media stereotypes. Her photographs remain powerful reminders that what we see in media often shapes how we think about people, especially women, and they continue to inspire both artists and scholars to explore the politics of representation.
