The Tetrarchs is a famous sculpture showing four Roman leaders who ruled together during the late 3rd century CE. Created to symbolize the new system of shared power introduced by Emperor Diocletian, the sculpture emphasizes unity and cooperation. Each pair of rulers is shown embracing, with identical stylized features to stress collective leadership over individual identity.
This style marked a shift from naturalism to abstraction, prioritizing political messaging over realism. The Tetrarchs represent a moment when the Roman Empire needed stability, and this visual strategy helped communicate strength through solidarity. Its placement in Constantinople (and later Venice) underlined its political importance.
